Dan Nadel has posted a preview of Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths at The Comics Journal. He's also done a great job of contextualizing the semi-autobiographical story:
"It is, like Jacques Tardi’s It Was the War in the Trenches, an alternately furious, humorous, and horrifying story. [...] Onward… is particularly affecting because from page one we know that the troops will die. They were sent only to fight and die, and freed of any conventional will-they-survive narrative, Mizuki gently chronicles the daily physical lives of these men."
Don't dillydally - the preview will only be available for the next week!
Over at The Manga Curmudgeon, David Welsh has this to say: "Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths has numerous merits in its own right beyond being part of Mizuki’s body of work." That's high praise indeed given Mizuki's status as a "giant of manga" (in Dan Nadel's words), and a "legendary mangaka" (in David Welsh's).
Onward... will be available in stores next week.
