Those damn hippies

This must have been a time-honored go-to subject in comics and gag cartoons of the late 1960s and early 70s. There are variations on the theme, but the gist of the gag is this: bystander with long hair is seen only from behind and is assumed to be female. Maybe one or two panels are inserted to move the joke along. By the last panel the bystander suddenly turns around, only to reveal that…(punchline)…"she" is actually a "he." I think many cartoonists of that era must have tread on this subject (didn't Dave Berg make an entire career out of this theme?) and the gag probably still gets recycled in one form or another. While sifting through material for the upcoming Nipper 1967-68, I came across Doug Wright's entry into this category, scanned from his own scrapbook:
