Run, don't walk, to Tokyo

Geneviève Castrée is a busy lady! We just got back from hanging out in Angouleme, France (okay, I was hanging, she was signing her November-released-French-edition-of-Susceptible at the L'Apocalypse stand), and now I'm delighted to tell you about a solo show she's got up in Tokyo! All this on top of her multi-city North America tour which kicks off this Friday in LA at Skylight Books! If you somehow have missed her in all these places, my heart goes out to you.

But Tokyo, Tokyo, maybe you are the luckiest of all! For you get to admire an exhibition of original artwork by Geneviève Castrée, entitled Hivers (Winters),  at her favourite gallery in the whole world, Popotame. Geneviève, being a born-and-bred Canadian after my own heart, knows a thing or two about winter. She says:

"Hivers means "winters". Where I am from the winters are dramatic. Snow and ice cover the ground and on a clear day your nose feels frozen and you squint your eyes because the sun and the white together make so much light. When snow falls the air is warmer and at night it really feels like a blanket putting houses to sleep. When I was a kid, I struggled through the Montréal winters. I would wait for the school bus with tears in my eyes because I couldn't feel my toes anymore. Now that I live so far away from authentic Canadian winter cold, on the temperate West Coast, I miss my childhood winters more than ever. Winters are a good place and time to start over. A new piece of paper."

The exhibit collects wintry images from Susceptible, and a number of non-Susceptible drawings on the same theme. It's at the Popotame Gallery in Tokyo, at Mejiro Station. It's only up for a few more days (until Tuesday February 19th), so make sure to get there soon!
