Michael DeForge on tour for Ant Colony!

FEAST YOUR EYES on this beauty of a tour poster drawn and designed by Michael DeForge, for Michael DeForge. Ant Colony will be in stores January 28 2014, and the super-prolific cartoonist will be visiting local book shops across North America to celebrate its launch. If you're unfamiliar with DeForge's singular, idiosyncratic style, I suggest you get acquainted, because he's one of alternative comics' most important new voices. Says Jaime Hernandez: "DeForge is one of those rare comics naturals and Ant Colony proves it."

From Ant Colony's opening pages, DeForge immerses the reader in a world of false prophets, unjust wars, and corrupt police officers. On the surface, he tells the story of a war between black and red ants, the destruction of a civilization, and the ants’ all-too-familiar desire to rebuild. Underneath, though, Ant Colony plumbs the deepest human concerns – loneliness, faith, love, apathy, and more.

Michael DeForge will be presenting a slideshow with a signing to follow. Happy new year, y'all!

Chicago: Anders Nilsen visits City Lit Books!

Chicago! Let us remind you that you have got another thing to add to your December calendars: Anders Nilsen is talking Rage of Poseidon this Sunday, December 15th, at City Lit Books! The event is free, begins at 4pm, and just seems like a really lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon, don't you think?

Anders will be reading from Rage and signing copies of that fine accordion book. He will also be interviewed by culture critic Jessica Hopper, who is a contributor to Chicago Reader, Spin, Pitchfork, and the author of The Girls Guide to Rocking. They are sure to share lots of brilliant, insightful things, like Anders did in today's interview for The Chicago Reader:

"Taking old stories that are 4,000 years old, you think they're not relevant," he says. "But if you bring them into the present day, you see they're stories about what it means to be human. The story about Athena ["The Girl and the Lion," in which the goddess becomes obsessed with the story of an early Christian martyr and eventually decides to live as a mortal] is one anyone can relate to, in a way. It's a story about coming of age, about growing older and losing your illusions."

City Lit Books is located at 2523 North Kedzie Blvd in Logan Square. They've got free parking if you need it. Here's the Facebook event.

And we're exhibiting alongside all these other great local vendors. Why not make an afternoon of it?

Puces Pop is taking place at Eglise Saint-Denis, 5075 rue Rivard, right by Laurier metro station for your traveling convenience. Here's when to drop by:

Friday, December 13th: 5pm to 9pm
Saturday, December 14th: 11am to 6pm

Hey, Chicago: ROOKIE parties at SAKI!

Hey, Chicago. I just want to friendly-remind you about the sweet ROOKIE PARTY happening this weekend at Saki- that's this Saturday, December 7th, from 6pm-9pm. Along with CANDY, you're invited to enjoy readings by Tavi Gevinson, Krista Burton, Gabi Gregg, and Jessica Hopper, and dance to a set by The Lemons!

Time Out Chicago has named the party one of the top ten things to do in the city this week (the thing to do, if you want my opinion), and look at what The Chicago Tribune says: "Whenever I pick these books up, they feel like they're vibrating in my hands: All the raw energy of being a teenaged girl — all of the flowers and rage and fairy dust and anxiety that come with it — has been channeled into these pages. Every high school kid deserves a gang of friends like those who write for Rookie. They're smart, savvy, and they don't mince words — whether the subject is fashion, friends or sex."
Saki will be buzzing with that same energy Saturday night, so grab your BFF and get ready to ~party~!

The Facebook event is right here for the joinin'.

Hey, Minneapolis! Anders Nilsen talks book arts!

Minneapolis, Anders Nilsen is going to be reading from Rage of Poseidon and talking unusual book design at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts tomorrow night, and as a rookie bookbinder/book artist, I'm really bummed to be missing out. But you don't have to! That's tomorrow night, Friday December 6th, at 7pm. The Center is located at 1011 Washington Ave S.

Anders is going to be doing a slide reading from Rage of Poseidon and will discuss the role of mythology and religion in his work and what it means to re-imagine ancient stories and set them in the present day.  And he'll share examples of his many forays into unusual storytelling formats, including accordions like Rage, screen-printed artist books, photocopied zines, and poster comics, and the relationship between these and his work in more traditional publishing. (Are we traditional publishing? We're cooler than that, right?)

The event is spotlighted on Pioneer Press's literary calendar for the week! Plus, check out this glowing new review at The Coast: "The marriage of form and content has never been healthier than in this darkly humourous rewriting of biblical and mythological parables. [...] the accordion-style pages and gorgeous casing make this book not only fantastically re-readable, but a true fetish item for bibliophiles."

I know you are all bibliophiles because you're reading the D+Q blog. This event is free and open to the public- please go and allow me to live vicariously through you. And Chicagoans, don't forget! He's coming next week to read to you and talk comics with Jessica Hopper at City Lit Books.
